MarineParents.com Establishes New Online Communication
Parents of Marines desire access to military sponsored support and answers to the many questions that are coming about as a result of recent and upcoming deployments to the Middle East by the United States Marine Corps. Tracy Della Vecchia, web site developer and mother of a Marine, has established a web site to collect and disperse information and links, as a reference to parents of Marines who have been deployed or may soon be deployed to the Middle East. The web site will help parents and families of Marines understand the basics of deployment in the face of possible conflict in Iraq.
The web site answers questions about paying bills, understanding power-of-attorney, finding the Marine's overseas address, how the APO/FPO mail system works, and many more guidelines for understanding the process and meaning of deployment. The web site allows for content contributions and announcements of support group meetings around the US as well as rallies to support the troops. The web site is updated several times throughout the day, including evenings and weekends.

MarineParents.com Helps with Mail and Care Package Guidelines to Deployed Marines
The number of visitors to www.MarineParents.com has climbed rapidly and is now over 15,000 visitors per week. The web site addresses many of the questions that parents, family, and friends have regarding the recent and ongoing deployment of Marines to the Middle East area. Many of the questions involve how and what to send in care packages, shipping guidelines, and timelines for package arrival in country. Della Vecchia has posted requests from Marines and family members for items that are needed overseas. The items include among other things, baby wipes for body cleansing with the limited availability of showers by many of the Marines in camps across the northern Kuwait desert. The care package section of the web site is updated daily as new requests and information come in from Marines overseas, post office guidelines, and experience of the many parents shipping packages overseas.
For additional information or to contact Tracy Della Vecchia, visit the web site online at www.MarineParents.com, email Press@MarineParents.com, call 573-256-6172, or write P.O. Box 370, Columbia, MO 65205-1115.

MarineParents.com Publishes USMC Structure, Terms, and Definitions, Toll Free Help Numbers, and Information about Phone Calls from In-Country
The web site www.MarineParents.com is now receiving over 24,000 visitors per week, and many of the questions from parents and family members of Marines deployed to the Middle East area involve terms and definitions of the Marine Corps, as well as the structure of the Marine Corps. In the ongoing quest to provide timely answers to requests and questions, Tracy Della Vecchia, web author, has published terms and definitions to help parents understand the structure of the Marine Corps and thereby have a way to attempt to understand where in the Middle East their sons or daughters are located and what activities they may be involved in. Della Vecchia communicates with hundreds of parents daily via email and an online chat room. The online communication provides a much-needed forum for learning and sharing accurate information among parents.
When asked about the communication, Della Vecchia responded, "Not knowing when or if a war will start, creates a lot of anxiety for these parents, and they want to know where their sons and daughters are. Understanding the structure of the Marine Corps and how the battalions fit inside the regiments has become critical to these worried parents. Every shred of information helps to ease the intensity of these emotions."
Another section of the web site provides toll free numbers for parents and family members to ask questions and hear pre-recorded messages about the activities of particular Marine Corps units deployed to Kuwait. And with many parents reporting that their sons or daughters have been allowed to make a phone call to home, Della Vecchia has now published a page about how the phone calls come in, whether it be via satellite or calling centers, collect or AT&T calling cards. The page includes tips for getting a calling card to your son or daughter overseas. Della Vecchia says "It helps the parents understand how the phone communications can work; these folks don't want to leave any stone unturned if it means even a brief phone call from their son or daughter."

MarineParents.com Web Site Traffic Reaches 12,000 Visitors Daily
The face of the web site www.MarineParents.com changes hourly to meet the needs of the 12,000 daily visitors that peruse the site in a quest to find information about their Marine son or daughter deployed to Kuwait. The number of web visitors to the web site has increased steadily since January. Tracy Della Vecchia, web author, reports 3-400 email a day with questions, suggestions, support ideas, and thank-you notes from parents, wives, friends, and family of Marines. "It's incredible the amount of time that is going into this web site and an incredible number of folks that are reading every page" says Della Vecchia. The live web traffic reports show visitors staying on the site for up to 2 hours at a time reading the huge volume of information which includes letters and phone calls to home from the Marines, lists of items to send in care packages, phone numbers to call for support, local support groups that have formed, and hundreds of links to reliable sources of information.
The information on the web site has been collected and published over the last two months in direct response to the emails received by Della Vecchia. "Accuracy is a primary focus; researching answers to the questions is time consuming, but the results are worth it. The web site gives parents and family accurate, easy-to-navigate information, and the result is parents and family that are better able to cope with the vast emotions of the possible conflict in Iraq."
When asked how she manages a personal response to the hundreds of daily email, Della Vecchia responded "I'm able to answer the email questions by referring folks to particular pages on the web site; I can do that with just a few keystrokes because I know the content of the web site. And then I tell them I understand how they feel. And I truly do. That's as important as the answer to their question right now. I know; I'm the mother of a Marine too."

MarineParents.com Publishes Embedded Reporter List, Communications from Deployed Marines, and Help for War-Related Stress & Relaxation Tips
The web site www.MarineParents.com now includes a list of reporters embedded with the Marine units, pages with links and articles on war related stress, relaxation tips, and perhaps most importantly, communications from the Marines in country. Tracy Della Vecchia, web author, receives hundreds of email daily from parents eager to share a newly discovered embedded reporter name, or letters and phone calls from their Marine in Iraq and Kuwait. "The families like to read what other Marines are writing. If you haven't heard from your son or daughter, it helps to read what another mom has received. We're reaching out and helping each other."
In response the emails she has received about stress related to the war, Della Vecchia has also developed several pages on the site with links to articles and information to help ease stress and understand the emotions of war. "Having a son over there motivates me to research some of this for myself, and sharing what I've found online is helping hundreds of other parents, sisters, brothers, wives, and families of our Marines. We're helping each other through communications on the web site." The web site is updated several times throughout the day and changes based on the current situation in Iraq and the needs expressed by Marine families.

MarineParents.com Publishes Marine Homecoming Communications and Travel Planning Information
With word that some Marines deployed to Iraq and Kuwait may now be homeward bound, the web site www.MarineParents.com has added a new section to the web site to address the questions and timelines related to the possibility of Marines returning stateside. Tracy Della Vecchia, web author, has included a page on ship returns, information specific to particular units, toll-free numbers to call, as well as travel guidelines for families planning to meet their Marine when they return stateside. The section on travel guidelines includes travel to 29 Palms, Camp Pendleton and Camp Lejeune with more to be developed in the near future.
There is a section of homecomings devoted to letters and phone calls to home from the Marines themselves, however Della Vecchia cautions that the information printed on the web site from the Marines may not be accurate, and that ultimately, the official word of homecoming needs to come directly from the USMC. The web site includes toll free numbers to call to verify homecoming dates and arrivals. Della Vecchia says the web site will also include photos of homecomings that are contributed by parents and family that visit the web site.

MarineParents.com Publishes Post-War Help, Guidelines, and Tools
Marines soon-to-be returning stateside from Operation Iraqi Freedom has opened up a new set of questions from the parents and family members of those Marines. The web site www.MarineParents.com has added a section to the web site that offers informational links and articles with post-war help, information on post-traumatic stress, guidelines for Marines, and support for the new generation of foreign war veterans. Tracy Della Vecchia, web developer, has worked with two other parents, both clinical psychologists, to research and provide answers to this next phase of questions in an effort to further support the parents and family members of deployed Marines.

MarineParents.com Publishes Homecoming Photos
The web site www.MarineParents.com has added a new section to the web site that includes photos of Marine homecomings upon return stateside as well as photos taken by the Marines while they were in Iraq and Kuwait. Tracy Della Vecchia, web author, is adding photos from homecomings as they are received via email. "There is a lack of media coverage for our Marines returning home. It's an absolute thrill for each of these families when their Marine returns stateside and we want to share this experience with each other as well," she said. Della Vecchia hopes Marines and families contribute photos from the homecomings and she expects to get a good response. Thus far the photos taken while in country are few and far between, but Della Vecchia encourages sharing to support the families whose Marines have not yet returned stateside.

MarineParents.com Son Returns from Iraq
Updates to the web site www.MarineParents.com haulted for Memorial Day weekend while Tracy Della Vecchia, the web site's developer, flew to California to welcome her son, Marine LCpl. Derrick Jensen, back to the United States from Iraq where he was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Della Vecchia's son arrived on Friday evening, May 23 at Twentynine Palms. Della Vecchia spent the earlier part of the evening personally meeting dozens of families that she had become acquainted with while developing, maintaining, and answering thousands of emails related to the web site. The web site offers a central location for parents and family members who are outside the loop of USMC communications to learn more about the Marine Corps, deployments, and the conflict in Iraq.
Emotions were running high for Della Vecchia and hundreds of other families while waiting for the busses filled with returning Marines to arrive at Twentynine Palms from March Air Force Base. "We had all been praying and supporting each other, waiting for this day. I remember telling people when they were really feeling down about the war, to imagine themselves hugging their Marine on a day just like this," said Della Vecchia. "It was absolutely thrilling to meet so many people that I had communicated with in such a personal way during the past five months." Della Vecchia's son was surprised by the activity centered around his mom; he'd heard about the web site but had no idea how much traffic and support the site and his mom had generated. "I knew she was going to do something like this," Jensen said. "I'm just glad he's home and I may never let go," responded Della Vecchia.

MarineParents.com Plans for the Future
The web site www.MarineParents.com has evolved and changed almost daily since its inception in January of this year. Getting information out to the parents and family members quickly is what has made this web site a timely and reliable source of information before, during and after Operation Iraqi Freedom. With over 15,000 visitors to the web site weekly (down from about 60,000 during Operation Iraqi Freedom), Tracy Della Vecchia, web developer, has plans for the face of the web site to change yet again. "We're all about supporting our Marines, supporting each other and sharing information. Once a Marine Mom, always a Marine Mom, and I'll be working with the web site indefinitely," says Della Vecchia. In addition to the daily updates and contributions from Marine parents and family members, there are plans for additional programming on the web site to provide more communication tools for parents to contact each other as well as online support groups.

MarineParents.com Helps to Prepare Families for Next Deployment to Iraq
With more Marines being deployed to Iraq, many for the 2nd time, MarineParents.com has released several new informational pages to help families prepare for the stresses of having a loved one in a combat zone. In 2003, thousands of families relied on the web site to provide valuable information and support during the Marines' deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. Significant changes have been made to the web site to facilitate the quicker dissemenation of information. "Putting the message board out there for the families to communicate with one another is probably the most vital upgrade for our families" says Tracy Della Vecchia, founder and developer of the web site. The message boards give the unique opportunity of connecting family members whose Marines are stationed together in Iraq or Afghanistan with each other. "It offers them a way to communicate their feelings with one another, and that's a crucial element of coping with the stresses involved when your son or husband goes off to war." says Della Vecchia. When one member gets a phone call from a son or daughter, sharing the phone call on the message boards helps other members to feel closer to their loved one. Other additions to the web site include new maps of Iraq, camp names, and the names of the units that have been or will be deployed to Iraq.

MarineParents.com Adds Regional Support Group Database
Military Support Groups have gained in popularity over the last two years, and the MarineParents.com web site now has a searchable database to list any military support group in local communities around the United States. "It's not just for Marine family support groups, it's for any and all branches of the military" said the founder, Tracy Della Vecchia. Della Vecchia saw a need to help get the word out about local support groups, saying "Often times a community may have a support group in place, but the folks that need the services, don't know how to locate them. This database will help." Della Vecchia encourages coordinators of local military support groups to enter their information in the database. "We have over 150,000 visitors to the web site each week, and we want these families to be able to hook up with each other for support."
